Functional data analysis as a tool for analyzing speech dynamics - a case study on the French word c'était

چکیده
In this paper we introduce Functional Data Analysis (FDA) as a tool for analyzing dynamic transitions in speech signals. FDA makes it possible to perform statistical analyses of sets of math ematical functions in the same way as classical multivariate analysis treats scalar measurement data. We illustrate the use of FDA with a reduction phenomenon affecting the French word c ’etait /se ts/ ‘it was’, which can be reduced to [sts] in conver sational speech. FDA reveals that the dynamics of the transition from [s] to [t] in fully reduced cases may still be different from the dynamics of [s] [t] transitions in underlying /st/ clusters such as in the word stage.

Comparative Effect of Visual and Auditory Teaching Techniques on Retention of Word Stress patterns: A Case Study of English as a Foreign Language Curriculum in Iran
This study aimed at investigating the effect of visual (Cuisenaire Rods) and auditory nonsensical monosyllables using Pratt speech processing software as teaching techniques on retention of word stress. To this end, 60 high school participants made the two experimental groups of the study each having 30 students on the basis of their proficiency scores on KET (Key English Test). In one experime...
متن کاملUsing functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) to explore brain function: cortical representations of language critical areas
Pre-operative determination of the dominant hemisphere for speech and speech associated sensory and motor regions has been of great interest for the neurological surgeons. This dilemma has been of at most importance, but difficult to achieve, requiring either invasive (Wada test) or non-invasive methods (Brain Mapping). In the present study we have employed functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging...

متن کاملPersian Handwriting Analysis Using Functional Principal Components
Principal components analysis is a well-known statistical method in dealing with large dependent data sets. It is also used in functional data for both purposes of data reduction as well as variation representation. On the other hand "handwriting" is one of the objects, studied in various statistical fields like pattern recognition and shape analysis. Considering time as the argument,...
متن کاملVowel elision in casual French: The case of vowel /e/ in the word c'était
This study investigates the reduction of vowel /e/ in the French word c’était /sete/ ‘it was’. This reduction phenomenon appeared to be highly frequent, asmore than half of the occurrences of this word in a corpus of casual French contained few or no acoustic traces of a vowel between [s] and [t]. All our durational analyses clearly supported a categorical absence of vowel /e/ in a subset of c’...
